This one was aired on Jan 27, 2009 at 9 pm. Summary of the program: Why are thin people not fat? There are so many factors that make us fat or slim. Today's program showed an experiment run on 10 participants overlooked by doctors, prof from UCL, Imperial, Wesminster, etc.. Participants who claimed they can't get fat ate food twice the amount of daily calories their bodies require (calculating by their biological/physical status) for 4 week. Target weight gain is 15% original weight. In general they eat thousands calories a day. They can't exercise and can't walk exceed 5000 footsteps a day. Doctors measure a lot of things throughout the experiment (not only before and after). By the end of the month, 2 has gained about 8-9%, the rest were avg at 5-6%, 2 failed to eat up to min calories. Interestingly all but one gain weight and weight gained is fat. The exceptional one gained weight but not fat (look the same). He is Asian. It turns out that his body has more muscle without exercising and his calorie burning rate has increased. Summary of theories proposed in the program: - People get fat because of their brains register at one approx obese size and the body will response whatever it can to reach that size. - Obese people got infected by a fat virus (has been extremely experimented by a prof on chicken and 1000s obese patients). He said about 20% of fat people who are really fat got infected by this virus at one point in life. - Obese people has developed the tendency to get fat, dating back to the days inside wombs (what mama eats) and throughout childhood. - Skinny people has gene and mechanism that resist getting fat, physically and also psychologically. Two weeks after the experiment, all 10 participants got back to their normal self, (they said) without trying hard to lose weight. So in summary, skinny people tend to be skinny and fat people tend to be fat. It is difficult to gain weight or lose weight out of your normal size. And getting near fat people won't get you infected by that fat virus. :) *************** I would love to see the experiment on aging people though. All subjects are in their early 20s. I do think somehow that I have that kind of gene because there were years that I ate like pig. I just never get fat (when I thought I was fat.). But the gene must get older as I grow old so I can't eat much anymore. ***************
March 09 My Menstrual PainUpcoming Schedule Updated 29/02/2008 The Leap Day - Have an appointment with a gynaecologist at the RUH on Apr 17, 2008 - Must have 2nd blood/hormone test at Uni's Med Center as soon as having the next period cycle **********************************************************
Symptom (updated 11/02/08) - Blood and hormone seem normal (from 1st test) - Having two pieces of fibroid in my uterus, 3x3x3 and 1x1x1 cm. - Having huge endometriotic cysts in both ovaries, 7x7x8 and 3x3x2.5 cm. ********************************************************** I will dedicate Facebook Note to record knowledge and solution to cure my period pain (i.e. Menstrual or Dysmenorrhoea). I have suffered from this pain throughout my life. I am in supreme pain, I can't eat, I can't sleep, I faint and I am always half conscious. It is time to start taking it seriously. History of treatment (all under doctor suggestion/prescription) I normally take an anti-inflammatory medicine, and over-the-counter pain relievers. It doesn't help much but I do take them regularly because I cannot stand not taking pills. I used to be prescribed hormonal birth control pills but it caused cysts. I used to have acupuncture. It helped relieving back pain. Diet Change (Feb 11,2008) After 2 months trying, I'd like to conclude that changing of diet plus taking supplements don't help with the pain because the root of my problem has nothing to do with food. Anyway, proper diet should be good for health. Meeting my GP (updated 11/02/08) - I must have another blood and hormone test to confirm the result. - I must see a gynaecologist to have further test to confirm the result (before making decision for further treatment). - For result, see above. Latest progress Note: Dr.Bligh, my GP, tried to make me feel good by telling me that I can live with it for 20 years. It's not that dangerous and I shouldn't worried much. F...k me, anyway here''s the fact. Fibroid is not dangerous; 1 in 5 women has it. Only if it causes pain then you should consider treatment. Endometriosis is a non-cancerous cyst, can cause painful periods and persistent pain in the pelvic area. 1 in 10 women has Endo. And in my case, they both cause pain. Treatment can range from taking drugs to taking hormone to uterus and ovary removal. Treatment by hormone doesn't work with me because it will cause breast cysts. If the gynaecologist confirms the results, I might have to go for a surgery. At least it becomes clear what causes pain and why I run to the loo so often in the past 20 years of my life. I know I'll live. Will keep posted! July 28 Traveling Month with ParentsEventually my parents went back to Thailand. I drove them to Heathrow and just got back. It started last year, this plan. I went to Switzerland with Tik and was so impressed by its natural beauty. At that time, the only thing I thought was to give my parents a chance to experience the same thing (which is their dream.). I planned it one year in advance; I planned to take them to Switzerland and they should be staying with me for 1 month. I have never thought it would be this hectic for I didnt know my schedule as a 2nd year PhD student. Anyway, I have managed to take them to more places than they have ever dreamt of. We went to Switzerland, Spain and Southwest of England. Of all 5 weeks, we have traveled for 24 days. Of all those 24 days, I was a driver, porter, photograhper, guide and etc. Super tired but I'm happy to see them happy. For the first time in my life that I took care of my parents. For the first time, we have spent time together almost 24 hrs a day. For the first time, I learnt that I possess their characters. For the first time, I learnt about my family. The love that they have for me is the only true love of my life. June 17 Why can't people be honestIt is just a question that keeps coming back to me.
And I know that I won't get any answer.
People like that are just not cool. They think they are, though. May 28 Let's facebook1It's been sometimes that I haven't updated MSN spaces. Life is as usual, busy. In addition, I am addicted to using facebook and found that life is easier and more fun communicating to friends through facebook.
So if you are reading this and would like to know how it feels like as a facebooker. Log on to www.facebook.com, apply and find me. I see u there.

Cirencester (GL7 2NW), Bibury, Bourton on the water (GL54 2BU - have lunch here), Castle Combe, Lacock (and its Abbey), Burford (OX18 4LP), Chipping Camden (GL55 6HR)
:) A Year of TravellingI have written in my facebook. One more good news. I got accepted to Interact 2007 in Rio... Was dream about going to Rio when I was in Venice last Jan. Couldn't believe that it comes true so soon...... So my rough journey plan this year is first in Cardiff, then Toronto, (hopefully) Chicago and then Rio. Has a lil chill hope being in California some time in between Chicago and Rio. We are what we aim and go for! My flatmate made an interesting comment. You are what you go for ?!?! Does that make you british , canadian, american and Brazilian? I forgot to add that in between Chicago and Rio, I will definitely go to Switz and Spain (with my parents). So shall I add Swiss and Spanish to the above nationality lists. Um.............. At the moment, I am so sick of applying visa. It takes all of my time, each document needs days to research, book, prepare...Goshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any nationality that will help me out of this shit will do. Actually I prefer British.... Look around.............Herr.........a big sigh............not even a single prospect. March 11 Exmoor National Park: Lynmounth and LyntonAfter suffering from bad quality photos management in MSN spaces for a year, I finally decide to join facebook (www.facebook.com). It is one of a kind embeding the concept of social computing. I had so much fun exploring it last night. The first two photo albums I posted on facebook are for our day trip to Exmoor national park, covering two cities: Lynmounth and Lynton. (This is the trip for Ay farewell.) It took 2.5 hours driving. On the way to Exmoor, we did stop for breakfast at Glastonbury. It was such a lovely day and everything is perfectly fine. Lynmounth is called England's Switzerland; is where rivers and sea meet with the mountains. Lynton has stunning view of valley of rocks. It's such a lovely day for all of us: Ay, Em (photographer), Dalia, Ali, James, Pete, Sab, and our chauffeurs - Hagen and Yun. Thank you everyone for all the good time together. This trip is also to test my 2 new cameras: Fuji s6500fd and Canon IXY L4. The former is great, the latter is ok with portrait but not for view or moving objects. In general, I am quite happy with them. Take a look at: http://bathac.facebook.com/album.php?aid=7687&id=853930141 http://bathac.facebook.com/album.php?aid=7678&id=853930141 ps. The only weakpoint I found in facebook is that there is no slide show function when displaying photos. Flickr is another online photo management that is very popular at the moment.
March 06 Thai Night 2007The biggest annual event held by Thai Association is Thai Night. This year, as one of a committee, I got under snowed with so many things but we have managed to have it done nicely with lots of laugh and fun.
Thank you for all.
I have uploaded an album for this event. As well as, there are several links available for more photos.
The first one "Thai Night 1" is the atmosphere earlier that day before the event start. http://www.flickr.com/photos/notepichy/sets/72157594554894388/
the second one "Thai Night 2" is since the event start at 6 pm : http://www.flickr.com/photos/notepichy/sets/72157594554926848/ The third one "Thai Night Performance" : http://www.flickr.com/photos/24918141@N00/sets/72157594555750967/ And the last one "After the show" : http://www.flickr.com/photos/24918141@N00/sets/72157594556819368/ Good newsYesterday I got accepted to the Pervasive 2007 Doctoral Colloquium which will be held in Toronto this May.
After a month of hardworking (Jan 2007), I have submitted papers to 3 conferences and 1 scholarship. I was rejected from CHI but this one helps keeping my hope growth.
Last year when I got accepted to several events, I was glad but they were all not because of my current work, rather my fortune or my past experieces (of course, nice CV). This time the feeling is totally different, I did write something, express my idea and research interest to the HCI community.
It is absolutely true according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, as a PhD student in computer science, my self-actualisation needs is to be accepted by peers as one of the HCI researchers who has produced valuable works and contribute my findings to the advancement of HCI field of study. I thrives for more.
ps1. But just yesterday, again I discovered something that contradicts my belief then it weakens my current idea of research topic.
ps2. The photo I took last week, for the first time in Thai costume (Chak-gree) for the Global Evening 2007.
March 03 Ann Frank, Violence and The WorldMy friend asked me yesterday, what's my future plan? Well.........gonna be a Dr. then get back working for sometimes and get out of Thailand, find the place in need, I'll work for the poor indeed. The the next question to myself, Why outside Thailand? I am not sure about the answer I just feel like it. Thailand is a miniature world, there are many people in need but I might fear of the social depress and sexual captivity of male population in my country. I would not be safe to be a woman in rural area. I feel lonely sometimes but I am sad no more. I am independent and happy being alone. In retrospection, I was so unhappy in the past. I was crying out, dying to have someone loving me. But now I know that there are many more people suffering. There is no point for me to mourne about my good life. I have a house, family, bank account, plenty of clothes, many gadgets, nonsense stuff and big responsibility for the world I live in. It is ruined by us. Humans fight and kill the others for nothing. The world has never been in peace, just once in our history. I am reading Ann Frank's diary, following a visit to her house in Amsterdam and a view of the movie Freedom Writers. We are so little as an individual. We might not make a big change in history. At least, I hope that having this intention, I will at least leave something good for the next generation. Violence is everywhere. Racism is hidden in a modern society. It likes chain reaction. Because we are human being so we need someone to feel superior of. If there is a God and he cursed us for our sins, I would say that we must have indefinite of those. We pay the price by living this suffering life. No matter who you are, where you are, you will never be happy or rest in peace. But I am a buddhist, we dont have God anyway. It's too sad, too sane, this diary. I shall stop it here. ps. I still cant live in green to help reduce carbon emission. I hate me for this.
